2013 TENUTA ORNELLAIA Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia 75cl (Tuscany, Italy)
Style - Spicy
Grapes - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot
Tasting - This is the vintage dubbed L'Eleganza by winemaker Axel Heinz. The word appears on the back label. Dark crimson with purple notes. Very ripe but with lively, savoury top notes and lifted freshness. Great balance and approachability already. Funny to think of how [light] even the finest 2013 red Bordeaux would taste alongside this luscious wine. Scented and savoury. Pure hedonism. Not sure 'elegant' is the word I'd choose in a global context, but maybe it is appropriate in an Ornellaia context. Drink 2016-2026 18.5/20 writes Jancis Robinson MW
FYI - The little zone around the town of Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast is about an hour so drive south of Pisa airport. It's here that the genre-busting Sassicaia estate inadvertently created the 'Super Tuscan' category of wines. Ornellaia's vines are perfectly poised between the fresh sea breezes of the coast and warmer inland climate which enables these grape varieties to flourish here. It's a no expense spared operation and will provide a beautifully uplifting accompaniment to a great meal.
ABV - 14%Contains sulphites.
