2017 KEERMONT Terrasse White Blend 75cl (Stellenbosch, South Africa)
Style - Rich
Grapes - 55% Chenin Blanc, 21% Sauvignon Blanc, 14% Chardonnay, 5% Viognier, 3% Marsanne, 2% Rousanne
Tasting - A motherlode of grapes in this blend yet rather than losing their way and becoming a miasma of meh this is one of the great under-the-radar whites of South Africa. Winemaker Alex Starey might be better known for his reds at Keermont but we think this is a gorgeous showcase of the potential of Cape White Blends. Focussed on Chenin but the other grapes lend complexity and freshness. There's a creamy and cobnut like scent with touches of melon and whipped cream with lemon zest. Beautiful, classically proportioned stuff.
FYI - A monumental week long trip to South Africa in 2018 for the bi-annual Cape Wine show wrapped up at the beach in Somerset West learning to surf with Keermont's winemaker Alex. It's not all work, work, work at the buying desk for us sometimes.
ABV - 13.5%
