Forget the stuffy claret clichés. Today’s Bordeaux is one of the most dynamic, food-friendly and forward-thinking wine regions in France. And this autumn, we’re bringing that energy to Vagabond.
A Love Affair with London
London and Bordeaux go way back. In the Middle Ages, barrels of claret sailed straight up the Thames, fuelling a cross-Channel fling between the English (fondly dubbed “roast beefs” by the French) and Bordeaux’s reds. For generations, it’s been the wine of Christmas tables, power lunches and big celebrations.
“Bordeaux has a special place in our hearts,” says Vagabond buyer Freddie Cobb. “It’s the region many of us grew up hearing about. But the truth is, it’s not just for dads in suits. The wines are fresher, fruitier and more versatile than ever. It’s a region with an exciting future.”
Not Just Red, Not Just Serious
Sure, Bordeaux still makes those structured reds that sing with a Sunday roast. But it’s also a hotbed of aromatic whites, textured blends and bright, fruit-driven wines that work just as well with seafood as with curry night.
“The best producers are focusing on balance and drinkability,” Freddie explains. “They’re making wines that are world-class but also fun, accessible and brilliant with food.”
Why Now
Bordeaux has always been part of London life — from medieval merchants to modern wine bars. At Vagabond, we see it less as an old-school classic and more as a region alive with possibility. Crisp whites, juicy reds, pinks with personality, even age-worthy bargains.
As Freddie sums it up: “Bordeaux is at its best when you throw away the rule book. It’s diverse, it’s changing, and it’s as exciting as anywhere in the wine world right now.”
