Delightfully dark and pure aromatics open this up and the palate has the depth and concentration of wines twice the price from better known parts of Tuscany.
COLIN'S NOTE
There is far more to Tuscan wine that just Chianti. Here is a DOCg that sits adjacent to Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano that may not have the same recognisable name but still makes equally delicious wines.
IN SHORT
Tuscan soul, organic, pure Sangiovese.
BASILE
Basile has been making organic wine in the hills of Maremma since 1999 — long before it was trendy. Giovan Battista Basile took over an abandoned estate and, together with his family and winemaker Maurizio Saettini, turned it into a thriving patch of vines surrounded by wild Tuscan woodland. Everything here is hands-on: no weedkillers, horse manure for fertiliser, hand-harvested grapes and small-batch winemaking in oak and steel. From pure Sangiovese to crisp Vermentino blends, the wines are elegant, honest and a true taste of southern Tuscany — proof that respect for land and family can make bottles sing.
